Brenham Heritage Museum Hosts Black History Month Event: “The Fairy Tale Project” by Nia’s Daughter Movement Collective

On Saturday, February 15, 2025, the Brenham Heritage Museum was honored to host a special performance that celebrated Black history and culture as part of our Black History Month programming. Nia’s Daughter Movement Collective presented The Fairy Tale Project, a unique and powerful performance that captivated attendees and brought an important story to life.

Held at the museum at 105 S Market St in Brenham, TX, The Fairy Tale Project blended a range of artistic forms—modern and contemporary dance, jazz, musical theatre, and African diasporic dance—to tell the compelling story of a modern-day African American family reconnecting with their Texas Freedom Colony roots. This innovative performance served as both a historical exploration and a celebration of the cultural richness of African American families in Texas.

With a fusion of music, movement, and storytelling, the performance highlighted the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of African American communities in the face of adversity. Through the powerful medium of dance, the collective skillfully illustrated the journey of rediscovery and the emotional ties that bind families to their past.

Attendees, including students, educators, families, and history enthusiasts, were treated to an unforgettable show that not only entertained but also deepened their understanding of the shared history of the African American community in Texas. The performance’s ability to blend history and artistry left a lasting impression on all who attended.

After the performance, guests were invited to join in a special artist talk and reception with Stacey Allen, Artistic Director and Storyteller of Nia’s Daughter Movement Collective. The session offered a deeper dive into the inspiration behind The Fairy Tale Project and allowed for an engaging conversation between the artist and attendees. Guests also enjoyed light bites while reflecting on the meaningful experience.
