Celebrating Freedom: Art and Poetry by Lloyd Mays

Lloyd Mays is a self-taught artist and poet from Washington County. Born the last of fourteen children, he found out early on that his verbal expressions were often overshadowed in such a large family. Upon receiving a paint-by-numbers kit for his sixth birthday, Lloyd says that painting eliminated the need to compete for his family’s attention. Everyone would surround him to see what he had made. Today his paintings and poetry can be seen and read in Brenham as well as abroad. The exhibit includes soul-stirring images from Mays’ upbringing in Hog Branch. He uses acrylic on canvas to depict familiar local scenes, heartwarming family moments, and thought-provoking content. Some paintings and books are available for purchase. The exhibit will be open to the public Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and Wednesday through Friday by appointment.
