The Brenham Heritage Museum’s Juneteenth exhibit, “The Music, the Melody, the Message: Evolution of African American Music Featuring Artists from Washington County” explores African American music’s evolution from Africa to Texas, onto the national stage and beyond. The exhibition brings together photos, artifacts, and articles to showcase the work of talented Black musicians with Brenham roots. This exhibition was made possible by the Museum’s African American Content Committee.

“Juneteenth is a beautiful opportunity for our community to come together in celebration of Black artists and their creativity. We’re excited to share this exhibit that chronicles and honors the contributions of Black musicians today and across time.” said Cheryl DaBera, a volunteer and member of the Museum’s African American Content Committee.

Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when news of the Civil War’s end reached Galveston, Texas—nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Since 2019, the Brenham Heritage Museum has hosted various exhibits and community events marking the holiday.

On display through June and July, this exhibit is available to members and visitors during regular Museum hours, Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, at 105 S Market Street in Brenham. Groups of 10 or more can call the museum at 979-830-8445 to schedule specific times for tours.
